This year, we are excited to welcome nearly 20 medical events to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) and the Hynes Convention Center (Hynes).
Award-winning facilities, iconic landmarks, and dynamic culture make Boston the perfect meeting destination, but there are many other factors that make the city especially appealing for medical meeting planners.
Massachusetts has some of the best hospitals in the nation including the top 5 independent hospitals supported by National Institute of Health (NIH) funding. And Boston has been the #1 recipient of NIH funding for 22 consecutive years as of 2016. The region is also a leader in medical education with 22 world-famous teaching hospitals and academic medical centers, 18 nursing schools, and the top medical school in the U.S. – Harvard Medical School.
In the past decade, Boston has also established itself as one of the world’s leading centers for the development and manufacture of biopharmaceutical products and boasts some of the world’s premier medical research facilities. The city ranks number one in the latest GEN Magazine “Top 10 U.S. Biopharma Clusters” list thanks to its high NIH funding, lab space (16.77 million square feet), number of patents (5,634), VC funding ($2.028 billion), and jobs (82,075).
More than 450 life sciences companies, including major corporations like Merck, AstraZeneca, AbbVie, Biogen-Idec, and GlaxoSmithKline, have established presence in Massachusetts. Nearly half of the top 20 global big pharma companies have opened large innovation centers or even moved their research (or in some cases corporate) headquarters to Boston and Cambridge. Examples include Novartis, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, Pfizer, Sanofi-Genzyme, Eli Lilly, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and Biogen.
With more than 50% of U.S. healthcare professionals and more than 50% of physicians conducting research within a two hour flight radius of Boston, medical events at the BCEC and Hynes consistently draw record-breaking or near-record-breaking attendance.
