Boston is a hub of medical and biotechnology innovation. Few cities in the United States have more doctors than the city of Boston and over 50 percent of U.S. healthcare professionals are within a two-hour travel radius. Boston is home to many of the leading research facilities, hospitals, and universities and has been the top city for NIH-funding for the last 25 years.

In the most recent US News & World Report Ranking, two Boston hospitals ranked among the top 20 in the nation out of more than 6,000 facilities: Massachusetts General Hospital (#6) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (#12)

In June, U.S. News ranked Boston Children’s Hospital as the top pediatric hospital in the country for the seventh consecutive year. Boston Children’s ranked as the best in four out of ten specialties: nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.

There are over 450 life sciences companies based in the Greater Boston area and 18 out of the top 20 biopharmas have a major presence in Boston/Cambridge. One life sciences company that has been in the news is Moderna Therapeutics, which is the first COVID-19 vaccine developer to begin a Phase 3 trial in the U.S. The trial will enroll up to 30,000 people and is being conducted in conjunction with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

In September 2019, Boston/Cambridge was once again number one in the annual TOP 10 U.S. BIOPHARMA CLUSTERS ranking put together by GEN Magazine.

Boston/Cambridge is second in patents (7,935), and leads the nation in lab space (figures range from 30 million [Colliers|Boston] to 23.9 million [JLL]), NIH funding (5,004 awards totaling $2.627 billion), and VC funding ($6.789 billion in 174 deals).
