Major renovations to Terminal E at Boston’s Logan International Airport were completed in April, part of a $100 million airport improvement program. The project entailed enhancements to the passenger experience, expansion of terminal space, and adding three gates capable of accommodating newer, larger aircraft.

Terminal E is Logan’s international terminal, serving 54 international destinations to locations in South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. International travel to Boston is critical to the state’s highly travel-dependent and diversified economic base in industries such as information technology, biotechnology, healthcare, education, and medical scientific research/products.

In 2016, Terminal E handled more than six million passengers. To accommodate current and future expansion of international flights, 95,000 square feet was added to the terminal area, bringing the total area to 799,000 square feet. The expanded terminal features three new gates with two-level jet bridges to expedite boarding and accommodate larger aircraft, such as the giant Airbus A380 (serving 525-853 passengers) and the 747-8 (serving up to 467 passengers).

In addition to the new gates, holding rooms were added to the departure area, new de-boarding areas were added to the arrivals level, and the security checkpoint was expanded. Immigration and customs at the terminal’s west end was renovated, plus the new fourth floor that accommodates boarding to the Airbus A380 via brand new Airline Clubs.

Technical upgrades included the installation of automatic aircraft docking guidance systems and air ground support equipment, as well as upgrades to existing air ground support equipment at gates.

For passenger comfort, seating areas were redesigned and all seats now have power and USB charging facilities. New concessions and other supporting spaces were also added. To enhance the atmosphere of the space, new displays and art installations showcase Massachusetts innovations and inventors.

Logan International Airport is conveniently located near downtown Boston, just 8 minutes from the BCEC and 15 minutes from the Hynes, and offers several free or low cost transportation options for visitors.
