BCEC is Getting New Neighbors

Development is booming in the South Boston Waterfront District! The home of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) keeps expanding rapidly with new business openings, construction projects, new restaurants and shops, and company relocations almost every week. We know our customers and partners want to keep up with the news of the area, so we will continue to update you through the blog about items we think may be of interest to you:


Just a couple of days ago, BLDUP announced that a tower crane is already in place for the upcoming Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport, which broke ground in May 2018. The project will feature two 21-story towers connected by a 3-story ground floor podium.
The new Omni hotel, located across the street from the BCEC, will have more than 1,000 guest rooms, along with 120,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and a number of additional amenities.


Numerous local publications reported that a Trader Joe’s grocery store might be coming to Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, making it potentially the first grocery store in the Seaport. Rumor has it that a representative for the California-based grocery chain has filed paperwork related to a location at 44 Thompson Place (just 0.5 miles away from the BCEC). Learn more here.


Scandinavian architectural firm, Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) released details surrounding their Seaport World Trade Center revitalization project. The project will transform the historic maritime site into a new waterfront destination with modern, flexible office space, new public amenities, retail, and dining, and dynamic event space. The adaptive reuse project seeks to maintain the site’s historic origins, while introducing new materials, increased daylight, and new points of connectivity, according to SHL. • Global tech leader, PTC, announced the completion of its new 250,000 SF headquarters, located on 121 Seaport Boulevard. PTC will relocate 1,000 of its 6,000 worldwide employees from its former HQ in Needham, MA. PTC’s new technology-rich headquarters is a key part of the company’s business transformation, enhancing PTC’s profile and serving as a premier destination for employees, customers, and partners to experience PTC’s technology. The newly constructed 17-story, 400,000 SF office building in Boston’s Seaport District has recently received the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification.

• State Street also revealed plans to relocate its headquarters to One Congress, a 1 million-square-foot office tower currently under development. State Street will begin a 15-year lease for 510,000 square feet in the building in 2023 when its current lease expires. “State Street has called Boston home for 226 years, and today’s announcement reinforces our continued commitment to this thriving and distinctive city,” Ron O’Hanley, State Street’s president & CEO, said in a prepared statement. • Biotech firm Akouos is also moving to the Seaport, where the company will occupy 37,500 square feet of lab space on the second floor at 645 Summer Street. 645 Summer Street is part of a multi-building complex known as Pappas Commerce Center located in the heart of Boston’s Seaport District. The cutting-edge flex building is designed to meet the expectations of Boston’s new economy.
