BCEC’s Neighborhood is Getting Its First Grocery Store This Fall!

In case you missed the news, the Boston Business Journal recently reported that the South Boston Waterfront, home to the BCEC, will finally be getting its first major grocery store. A new Trader Joe’s will open its doors this fall at 44 Thomson Place in Fort Point, just a short walk (0.5 miles) from the BCEC.

Trader Joe’s Fort Point location will take up between 15,000-20,000 square feet of retail space (on par with their standard-size stores) and will have fresh produce, meats, robust cheese selections, and floral departments. According to the company’s website, the location will not sell any alcohol.

The Boston Business Journal also reports that the store will be built by Hanover-based MDM Construction, whose previous projects include various Stop & Shop locations, as well as a Starbucks. And the design of the new outpost will be a collaboration between Waltham-based Scott/Griffin Architects and the grocery store’s internal design team.

Kenya Friend-Daniel, Trader Joe’s spokeswoman, confirmed in an email to Boston.com that the grocery store is aiming for a fall opening.

“We’re excited to be coming to the area and look forward to welcoming customers to their neighborhood Trader Joe’s store,” Friend-Daniel wrote. “We feel the location is a great fit and the time was right.”

With the addition of Trader Joe’s and other new neighborhood amenities, the Seaport has become a full-service neighborhood offering your guests all the creature comforts they might need when attending an event at the BCEC.

Earlier this year, The Boston Globe reported that the neighborhood will also be getting a book store as Porter Square Books is preparing to open a second location in the literary nonprofit’s new narrative arts center at 50 Liberty. Additional neighborhood amenities include CVS (85 Seaport Blvd.), Sephora (66 Seaport Blvd), Bluemercury (105 Seaport Blvd), Icon Showplace Movie Theater (60 Seaport Blvd), USPS Mail Truck, several bank branches, a seasonal weekly Farmers Market, and more.
