Boston Convention Employees Get Trained in Bleeding Control

In 2015, the White House launched “Stop the Bleed”, a national awareness campaign designed to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency.

In case of a serious bleeding injury, often a few minutes can make the difference between life and death. No matter how quickly first responders arrive, bystanders will always be first on the scene. Those nearest to someone with life-threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care when they are equipped with the appropriate training and resources.

As part of an ongoing commitment to safety and security, this month, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) launched a series of Stop the Bleed training classes for its entire staff and contract partners, and is making equipment available at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) and the Hynes Convention Center.

Bleeding control kits are available on each floor of the BCEC and the Hynes and are located right next to the AED Defibrillators

“The MCCA provides space where large crowds of people gather”, said the MCCA’s Chief Information Security Officer, Rob Noonan. “It is extremely important to us to be able to help in case of an emergency in any of our buildings or in our neighborhood.”

Each session is approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours in length and includes theory and practice focusing on the ABCs of bleeding control:

  • Ensure your own safety
  • The ABCs of Bleeding:
  • A – Alert – Call 911
  • B – Bleeding – find the bleeding injury
  • C- Compress – apply pressure to stop the bleeding by:
  • Covering the wound with a clean cloth and applying pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands, OR
  • Using a tourniquet, OR
  • Packing (stuffing) the wound with gauze or a clean cloth and then applying pressure with both hands.
  • More information about the program and training resources can be found on BleedingControl.org
