Latest Headlines from the Boston Seaport

The South Boston Waterfront District (also known to many as the Seaport) continues to expand. Each month there are several business openings, new buildings going up, and major announcements from businesses choosing to relocate to the area. We know that the news of the area is of interest to our customers and partners (and us, of course!), so we will continue to update you through the blog about items we think may be of interest to you.

  • Amazon is in negotiations to lease a planned 18-story office building in Seaport Square, with 430,000 square feet of space for 2,000+ new employees. They are also discussing the possibility of expanding up to one million square feet with an additional new building next door, for a total of 4,000 employees by 2025. This is in addition to the already leased 150,000 square feet on Summer Street (down the street from the BCEC) and hiring of 900 workers, opening in 2018. Amazon currently employs 1,200 people in the Greater Boston area.

  • Could there be a gondola connecting South Station and the South Boston Waterfront District? Millennium Partners and Cargo Ventures, who are developing a 12-acre project at Boston’s marine industrial park, are considering a one-mile-long aerial gondola system that could carry the passenger equivalent of 40 city buses per hour. The current plan includes a stop at the BCEC.

  • MassMutual is planning a $240 million office building for 1,000 workers in the South Boston Waterfront District. MassMutual Life Insurance Co. is the largest private company in the state by revenue and Massachusetts’ third-largest Fortune 500 company. They plan to develop a 300,000-square-foot office building to open by 2021.

  • New openings:

  • Kerasotes ShowPlace Icon movie theater: this luxury theater has 10 auditoriums, heated seats, a lounge menu, full bar, and adult-only hours.
  • 75 on Courthouse Square: sister restaurant of 75 Chestnut and 75 on Liberty Wharf, this larger restaurant has room for 250 and has private event space. The menu is a mix of American-style food, plus pasta and seafood.
  • Hopsters: a make-your-own-beer and brewpub on Sleeper Street, Hopsters has a 4,000-square-foot dining area and bar overlooking a 2,000-square-foot brewhouse. Guests can reserve time to make their own beers on Hopsters’ 12 kettle system.
