The South Boston Waterfront District (aka the BCEC’s ‘hood) is welcoming new neighbors! Last year we spotlighted the various areas of the District, and highlighted some of the many construction projects and developments planned or taking place. The neighborhood has continued to expand and many companies have announced relocations to the area over the past few months. Today we highlight some of the biggest company moves taking place in our backyard!
- In 2016, General Electric (GE) moved its headquarters to Boston from Fairfield, Connecticut. GE plans to build a high-concept, 12-story headquarters building, and renovate two older brick buildings, at its 2.7-acre Fort Point site. The 400,000-square-foot campus will open in phases between 2019 and 2021 and house 800 employees.

- Seattle-based giant Amazon will add 900 new jobs at an office set to open next spring. The new office will be located around the corner from GE’s planned headquarters at a 150,000-square-foot space in Fort Point. This new office will be in addition to current offices in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

- Alexion Pharmaceuticals announced this month that they will relocate their headquarters from New Haven, Connecticut to a new office in Boston’s Seaport. Alexion is a maker of rare disease treatments and will employ 400 people in its new 150,000-square-foot headquarters, beginning next June. It was reported that the company was attracted to the Boston area for its deep talent in the life sciences sector, its innovation ecosystem, and the proximity to Logan International Airport.

- Red Hat, Inc. opened its new Fort Point facility this summer. The open source solutions provider opened their second location in the Greater Boston-area – a 40,000-square-foot space that will be home to their state-of-the-art Global Executive Briefing Center, a new Red Hat Engineering Lab, and the first U.S. East Coast location for Red Hat Open Innovation Labs.

- Computer software company PTC announced this month that it will relocate to the South Boston Waterfront District from its current Needham, Massachusetts headquarters in early 2019. The company will have 1,000 employees in 250,000 square feet of space in the same building as Alexion Pharmaceuticals, with PTC occupying 2/3s of the 17-floor building.

- Athletic company Reebok announced in late 2016 that it will move its corporate headquarters from Canton, Massachusetts to the District’s Innovation & Design Building. 700 employees will move this fall into approximately 220,000 square feet on five floors. The office will feature a two-story gym, a design lab, a retail store, a public restaurant, and even a mile-long running track around the building.

- One of, if not the first major company to open its headquarters in the Seaport was Vertex Pharmaceuticals in 2014. The $800 million, 1.1 million-square-foot space, in two glass-faced towers, houses 1,200 of the drug maker’s research and commercial employees.

- Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) announced in August that it has leased a 6,400-square-foot space to place the university amongst some of the nation’s leading innovators and technology companies from whom they will look to create helpful and strategic partnerships around curricular and research opportunities. Opening this fall, WPI will use the new space for industry-centric meetings, classes, projects, and events that are tailored to the interests and needs of the neighborhood – those working in areas such as healthcare technology, robotics, cybersecurity, and big data.

- Cloud connectivity company LogMeIn opened a second office space last year, across the street from its original office. The additional 117,000-square-foot space doubled the total Boston footprint to 227,000 square feet (with room to grow). The company employs 1,000 people globally, with half of them in Boston.

- Accounting and consulting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, relocated to the South Boston Waterfront District–into 12 floors of a 17-story, 455,000-square-foot building–in 2015. With 3,000 employees, PwC is one of, if not the largest, employers in the neighborhood.
