South Bay Town Center Expansion Project

Located about two miles from both the BCEC and the Hynes, an expansion of the popular South Bay Center shopping mall is underway. Located in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester, the South Bay Town Center project will transform 11 acres of the existing property into a five-building, one million-square-foot development.

South Bay Center is currently home to retail outlets like Target, Marshall’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, a large grocery store, a handful of national restaurant chains, and two hotels: Courtyard by Marriott South Boston and Holiday Inn Express South Boston (both hotels offer on-demand complimentary shuttles to the BCEC). The new development will add 475 studio and 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments with amenities such as a roof deck, pool, and gym. Outside of residential amenities, the very walkable complex will also house a 130-room hotel (whose brand is yet to be announced), 113,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space, a 12-screen movie theater, over 1,000 new parking spots, and community space.

Wahlburgers, a growing burger chain owned by Greater Boston natives Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg, is already committed to the space. Additionally, AMC Theater will occupy the theater space – bringing IMAX and AMC Prime Technology. Community space is set to serve events like famers markets, craft shows, charity drives, and festivals.

For visitors to our convention centers, South Bay Town Center is a one-minute walk from the Newmarket MBTA Commuter Rail Station on the Fairmount Line (which is the stop immediately after South Station - about a nine minute train ride), as well as a two-minute bus ride from Andrew Square T Station on the MBTA Red Line (which is two stops going outbound from South Station). It is also Boston’s most accessible shopping center by car – located directly off Interstate 93 (at Exit 18).

South Bay Town Center is set to complete work in the second quarter of 2018.
