South Boston Life Science Campus Breaks Ground

On December 20, ground was broken on the new Innovation Square (iSQ) in the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park located half a mile down the street from the BCEC. The anchor tenant will be Mass Innovation Labs, a biotech research accelerator currently based in nearby Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

iSQ is a phased 375,000 square foot research & development life science campus, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2019. The campus is designed to meet today’s flexible research and development requirements.

Mass Innovation Labs’ success in Kendall Square has fueled the need to expand to Boston. MIL was founded in 2015 and offers flexible lab space solutions to help life sciences companies, at various stages, reach their next milestones. They provide an on-demand, turn-key, pharma-grade research environment. The shared space is attractive as a launching pad for biotech startups, or host to research programs from larger companies headquartered elsewhere. Smaller companies that meet their scientific milestones will have the ability to move into larger space within the incubator.

Boston is a global leader in the healthcare and life sciences industry. It is also one of four cities (Cambridge, Boston, Quincy, Braintree) that make up the Life Sciences Corridor, the world’s largest life sciences cluster with more than 450 companies. 17 of the top 20 biopharmaceutical firms, and all ten of the world’s leading medical device companies, maintain facilities in Massachusetts; along with over 500 other biopharma companies and more than 400 medical device makers. Greater Boston is home to many world-class academic and medical institutions and a large and talented workforce.
