Conventions and events consistently shatter attendance and industry records in Boston’s Convention Centers, the Thomas M. Menino Convention and Exhibition Center (MCEC) and the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center (Hynes). In the last decade, Boston has proudly hosted nearly 100 events that broke attendance records across both convention centers.
This year is almost coming to a close, and Boston has already celebrated more than nine conferences that rewrote the record books. Each event welcomed its largest audience to date in Boston, continuing the momentum.
Events hosted in Boston are breaking records for one simple reason - attendees want to be here. With easily accessible convention centers located in a fun and safe city that's also home to top professionals in leading industries, Boston is a prime location for large scale events.
For attendees and planners alike, Boston has everything, even outside the convention center walls. The city is filled with history, innovation, sports, dining, and a rich local culture. With diverse neighborhoods, attractions, and dining options to explore, Boston is a fun-filled destination that's on everyone's bucket list.
Both the MCEC and the Hynes are in two unique, yet booming neighborhoods of Boston – Seaport District and Back Bay. Both host their own attractions, dining, nightlife, and cultural institutions, and are easy to navigate.
Boston is also famously known as a walkable city. Extremely compact, visitors can make it from end to end on foot. Luckily, with the various modes of public transportation available, that's not the only way to get around. With an international airport, two Amtrak stations, and the local MBTA subway "T" and bus routes, traveling is never an issue. It's easy to get from point A to point B when you're in Boston.
More importantly, though, Boston is consistently ranked as a safe, inclusive location for people from all corners of the world to visit. When attendees aren't worried about their safety, they're more likely to register.
Safety in Boston is top tier, and safety within the walls of the convention center is top priority. The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) and their Public Safety Department work diligently to ensure the safety of attendees with large scale events across the city, with much success. Most recently, the MCEC received a SAFETY Act Designation from the Department of Homeland Security for the development and deployment of Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technologies, the highest credential any convention venue in North America has received.
Planners and attendees trust the long tenure of Boston as an engaging and safe place to visit, and attendance records consistently prove this point to be true.
When you bring your event to Boston, you capitalize on the attendee base located in and around the area. Boston and surrounding areas host the largest, most qualified attendee pool in North America.
With a high concentration of experienced industry professionals and local institutions with niche expertise, Boston has become a hosting preference for planners. When events are planned in Boston, event speakers are easier to secure, and attendees are excited about networking with top industry experts. The local attendee bases not only make it easy for visitors to travel in; but it also makes it easier to plan an engaging, top-tier event.
Attendees of all kinds flood the halls of the MCEC and the Hynes, but a few industries score big attendance when hosting in Boston: Healthcare/Medical, Education, Life Sciences, and Technology. These industries host trail blazing events in Boston, and their attendees are consistently satisfied. Events that provide attendees with expert knowledge in their field, networking with industry peers, and opportunities for growth are likely to gain record turnouts.
In the last 10 years, nine (9) events in the education industry, fourteen (14) events in the technology industry, fifteen (15) events in life sciences, and thirty-three (33) events in the medical industry have broken attendance records.
Medical and health-care events are a specialty in Boston. In 2025, there were 7 events in this category that broke attendance records – the highest year for medical industry events that exceeded attendee expectations.
Among the event industry's record-breaking verticals, the technology sector also has one clear standout. Year after year, this event continues to set new performance benchmarks while fueling sustained growth in Boston. HubSpot has exceeded attendance records of their event six separate times in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023.
With two convention centers available, Boston can accommodate events of all sizes. The Hynes has been a pillar of the Back Bay community for nearly 40 years with vintage architecture that gives the building its own charm and unique character, while the MCEC is the Hynes’ younger sister with an expansive exhibition floor, top-of-the-line technology, and modern elements throughout.
Many clients, including HubSpot, Yankee Dental Congress, and Red Hat, have hosted annual or recurring events at the Hynes, only to outgrow it. From then on, these clients have moved their events to the MCEC to accommodate larger crowds. Some organizations, like IBM, for example, utilize both convention centers depending on the type of meeting or event they're hosting.
An added bonus to having two convention centers available in one city is the trusted, dependable team that comes along with them. From your first point of contact with Sales, you're easily guided through the planning process all the way to event execution. No matter which location best suits your meeting or convention, the onsite team at Boston's convention centers is here to guide you every step of the way.
