High School Student Spends Her Summer Learning the Convention Industry

Instead of spending her entire summer hanging out with friends at the mall or pool, one high school student spent the summer building her graphic design skills and learning all about the convention industry.

This summer, the Signature Boston team had the pleasure of working with Cindo, a local Boston student entering her senior year of high school. Cindo is part of the Summer Immersion Program put on by Youth Design, a Boston non-profit organization that empowers talented urban youth to pursue a path to higher education and promising equitable careers by engaging the professional design community to mentor, educate, train, and employ the next generation.

More specifically, she is part of the Youth Design Academy – a unique learning experience for teens that combines classroom creative skill building with exposure to professional designers and design workplaces. After completing a three-day-a-week course last summer in Design Fundamentals at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (for which students receive both high school and college credits), this year Cindo spent the summer at the Boston Convention Marketing Center in an intensive, full-time internship with the Marketing team.

“Youth Design’s priority is to help urban youth obtain the essential skills required to compete in the 21st century workforce,” said Tony Richards, Executive Director, Youth Design. “For many of our students, this is their first work experience. So in additional to gaining design skills, they are also gaining valuable work experience and networking opportunities. Our interns with the Boston Convention Marketing Center have had the chance to learn about the events industry and see how design is a part of the marketing of Boston and its convention centers.”

Working on projects like designing brochures and fact sheets, Cindo will complete her internship next week. Her final project for the summer program is taking part in the “Take Action” Design Competition in which she is designing a poster with original messaging and visuals to connect what a brand stands for (beyond profit) to a specific audience of her choice. The goal of the poster is to educate, inspire. and engage her chosen audience about the brand’s purpose (social issue).

“This summer was a great experience. I learned a lot coming into a marketing team for the first time,” said Cindo.
